overview

Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 into a family of actors. Her parents Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges-Winslet were stage actors, as well as her maternal grandparents and uncle Robert Bridges.

Kate landed her first gig at age 11 in a Sugar Puffs cereal commercial, however, her first break came six years later at age 17, when she was cast in the 1994 film, “Heavenly Creatures.”

Still largely unknown, she won over Ang Lee and won the part of Marianne Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility.” Her portrayal won her a British Academy Award and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1996, Kate starred in “Jude” and played the role of Ophelia in Kenneth Branagh’s “Hamlet.”

In 1997, Kate Winslet became a household name by landing the lead role in James Cameron’s “Titanic.” She played the role of Rose, a woman who fell in love with a young man named Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, on the ill-fated Titanic. It forged a long-lasting friendship between the two, who reprised their chemistry years later in 2008’s “Revolutionary Road.”

Kate’s performance in “Titanic” earned her a Best Actress nomination, making her the youngest actress to ever receive two Academy nominations.

In the next few years, Kate added to her already impressive credits, appearing in “Quills,” “The Life of David Gale,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Finding Neverland,” “Little Children,” “The Holiday,” among many others.

In 2008 she appeared in both “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader” which earned her two 2009 Golden Globe wins, as well as a 2009 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role.

On the personal side, Kate married Jim Threapleton in 1998, and had a daughter, Mia, in 2000. They divorced in 2001 and she then married director Sam Mendes in 2003, and had a son, Joe.
