overview
Naomi Campbell is unquestionably one of the world’s very top super models, and has been practically since her discovery in 1985 at the age of 15. Although she grew up in a rough part of London, her Jamaican-born mother spent much of her dancer’s wages to send Naomi to the best stage schools of the day, grooming her for success from an early age. And it sure did pay off! Since hitting the scene in 1986, she dominated the modeling scene for more than a decade. Along the way she became the first black model to appear on the cover of French “Vogue” and “Time” magazines.
She’s also well known for her highly publicized temper. It’s hard to keep up with how many assistants she’s been accused of throwing firm objects (such as cell phones) at. Her list of “Greatest Hits” includes:
- In December 1998, the feisty fashion model pled guilty to beating her assistant.
- In September 2003, she was sued for allegedly throwing a phone at an assistant. The case was later dismissed.
- August 2004 brought a slapping allegation from one of Naomi’s maids. She was never charged.
- And March 2006 was exceptionally eventful - and filled with bloody evidence. An apron and sweater noticeably stained with blood worn by Naomi’s 42-year-old housekeeper were made public and Naomi was charged with second-degree assault.
- In June 2006, a maid sued Campbell for “personal injuries” and “civil battery.”
- And July 2006 was chock full was chock full of allegations of assault, battery and false imprisonment. She was never charged.
In 2007, the law finally caught up with her – Naomi plead guilty to misdemeanor assault for hitting her maid with a cell phone over a pair of missing jeans — in March 2007 she served five days of community service in New York City.
Success has also opened other doors for Naomi allowing her to create two of her own beauty and fashion companies and to give back to the world by working with Nelson Mandela and helping to create “Fashion Relief” to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims.
In late 2007 she was in the news for two highly publicized trips to Venezuela and Cuba, meeting with political regimes that are seen by many as oppressive.
