LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Reports of “The Twilight Saga” stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart dating – or marrying! – have run rampant in recent months as the November 20 release date of “New Moon” approaches, but in the December issue of Vanity Fair, Robert once again said their love affair is on-screen only.

“[We’re] good friends,” Robert told the mag, though he had plenty of warm feelings for his co-star. “I think she’s the best young actress around. She’s influenced how I’ve done all the ‘Twilight’ stuff. It’s quite nice to have someone who is genuinely indifferent to the whole spectacle of everything.”

It’s that spectacle that’s kept Robert struggling to stay out of the tabloids – and away from his ravenous fans.

“I’m not much of a crowd person,” he said. “I guess I’m not the type of guy cut out to do a franchise.”

Much less, one with time to go on secret dates with Kristen, he told the mag.

“It’s like, ‘Where? I can’t get out of my hotel room!’” he said.

Before “Twilight” made him a household name, Robert noted, he’d been “getting drunk for a year” and on the verge of quitting acting.

“I remember calling my parents and saying, ‘That’s it. I’m not doing this anymore,’” he said following his audition for the role of Edward Cullen in the film, which he felt he bombed.

But the studio called back – and he became an instant star. Still, though Robert’s good looks have earned the adoration of “Twilight”-loving tweens and moms alike, the actor was self-deprecating about his appearance.

“I was such a terrible model,” he said of his pre-acting work in the field. “I was really tall but still looked like a six-year-old.”

Now, however, he’s happy to be in films – especially more off-beat work such as the BBC thriller “The Haunted Airman,” where he played a wheelchair-bound “weirdo.”

“You can always have an excuse [for something],” Robert said. “He’s a weirdo!”
