LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Everyone is talking about the Michael Jackson documentary, ‘This Is It’. I saw a preview of it at a special Hollywood press screening Tuesday night and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Yes, it was cool to see him sing and dance and all that, but what I really enjoyed was seeing Michael the Man as opposed to Michael the Legend. I loved the candid side of him interacting with the members of his tour. I was also struck by what he was wearing.
Many stars would probably show up to rehearse in sweats. Not Michael… who wears gold sequined pants! Actually - I was pleasantly surprised that most of the clothes he wears for rehearsals are far less theatrical. We see the slender 5’9 star in skinny orange jeans and skinny black jeans.
He wears several oversized “boyfriend” style blazers, including a sleek silver one. He has a very, very cool bold shoulder black jacket with crystal studded lapels. It’s quite feminine and looks like it came right off the Balmain runway. His signature military jackets rock. He pairs many of them with tees and often accessorizes with classic Michael touches - a fedora and his always present aviators. These were not tour costumes, but Michael’s everyday clothes, his idea of being “casual.”
Michael died just days before he was to do a full dress rehearsal, so in the documentary we only get a tiny glimpse of the planned stage costumes, which is a real shame. Head Costume Designer Zaldy showed Access Hollywood the extraordinary pieces he created for MJ.
“He called me actually the night before he died and he called me just to say how excited he was about the costumes, how happy he was,” Zaldy says.
No wonder! Zaldy created one stunning ensemble after another. He updated the iconic red Thriller leather jacket. There were a range of suits and many pieces were embellished with beads, embroidery and Swarovski crystals. All featured customized personal touches, like the lining of a jacket, which shows Michael Jackson moonwalking. The suit Zaldy designed for ‘Billie Jean’ actually lit up.
Sadly, we will never see any of this. This really is it.
