LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

The stars gathered to remember Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday – and many were Tweeting through the tears.

“I hope I did him proud,” Usher Tweeted after his performance of “Gone Too Soon” during the ceremony. “That was the most emotional performance of my life… rest in peace Michael. you will always be in my heart.”

Before the event, stars Tweeted as they took their seats.

“My family and I just took our seats here at the Staples Center,” LeVar Burton Tweeted on Tuesday morning, and he wasn’t the only one.

“At Staples Center paying respects,” Nicky Hilton Tweeted, later writing, “I was in awe of how respectful all of the media and fans were. I expected chaos. Despite what is shown on tv everyone was very gracious.”

John Mayer, who performed “Human Nature” at the memorial, Tweeted on Monday night that he wasn’t going to “‘perform’ but to contribute.”

“I’m honored to have been asked to play at MJ’s memorial service. I will be representing all of us who can’t be there,” he wrote.

Larry King found himself impressed by the event’s speakers and performers.

“There was so much emotion when Usher & Brooke Shields took the stage,” he Tweeted. “Al Sharpton such a commanding speech, so dramatic in tone and content.”

Other celebs were remembering Michael from elsewhere.

“Having been inspired by Michael is the reason why I cannot be there,” Donnie Wahlberg Tweeted on Tuesday. “I have the honor of playing for our fans tonight instead. Full circle.”

And watching the memorial from a tour stop was an emotional moment for Jordin Sparks.

“Oh my goodness, I’m already crying. ‘We Had Him’… tears are pouring. Oh geez,” she Tweeted.

Stars, speakers and performers sighted at the memorial included Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Usher, Lionel Richie, Brooke Shields, Wesley Snipes, Magic Johnson, Dionne Warwick, Larry King, Rev. Al Sharpton, Tatum O’Neal, Wade Robson and a visibly pregnant Jennifer Hudson.
